From a childhood spent in front of the camera to sharing scenes with Hollywood legends, Camille’s journey is stitched with passion, persistence, and a touch of magic. At just 7 years old, she stepped into the world of acting, and since then, she’s gracefully navigated both French television and international cinema. In 2021, she made her mark in The Last Duel, directed by none other than Ridley Scott. As she continues to grow, create, and inspire, Camille sits down with us to reflect on the pivotal moments that shaped her path — from medieval film sets and Parisian stages to bold dreams yet to unfold. @camille_mutin
Hello Camille, you have a rich career… You started acting at the age of 7, and since then, you’ve dabbled in the world of television and film. In 2021, you landed a role in Ridley Scott’s film, The Last Duel. Tell us about that experience.
It was obviously an incredible experience. Ridley Scott auditioned over a hundred girls to find four young ladies of the court. I met Fiona Valinski on this set, a superb actress, and we had a waking dream. I shot my scenes with her, and we experienced everything together. And acting with Adam Driver and Ben Affleck, directed by Ridley Scott, was extremely educational. Ridley Scott is a force of nature ; he walks onto a set, everyone falls silent, and he listens to his words. But I was pleasantly surprised by the peace on set… Everyone was excited to make this big film with a $100 million budget, and yet, a feeling of closeness, simplicity and joy animated the days. Ben Affleck and Adam Driver discussed with us the shots, the work we were doing… Watching these big names in cinema work over several days helped me progress enormously, and strengthened my determination to work in this field.
Incredible! Indeed, you and Fiona Valinski really stood out on screen ! What’s your best memory from this shoot?
It’s hard to say, there are so many! I loved the beginnings, when I tried on the magnificent period dresses… The magic began. But in terms of the actual shoot, I often remember the first day, when we were taken to the location. It was very early, still dark. I was taken to my filming trailer, with my name on it. I was sitting right next to Fiona Valinski, who was reading the script and preparing for her big scene. And I was eating my breakfast (laughs), sitting at the door of this little caravan, and I was watching the crew members busy themselves, setting up… I was listening to film music in my headphones, like “My Rifle, My Pony and Me” in Rio Bravo, and other western music while watching a huge shoot begin… It was magical, I felt in my place, and more determined than ever.
And meeting Ridley Scott?
Impressive! Suddenly, you see one of the greatest directors approaching you… you don’t know what to expect… And Ridley Scott arrives, gives you a big smile, and extends his elbow to give you a thumbs-up and welcome you! I couldn’t believe it (laughs). It was memorable, and above all, very unexpected!
You also stood out in TF1 productions, “Petits secrets en famille” and “Petits secrets entre amoureux”… You played the lead roles. Were these shoots more intense?
In both of these series, I had a lot of script, so of course, the preparation was more intense. But I was at home, in France, with a smaller French crew, so it was less stressful than shooting with 20th Century Fox in Ireland! (laughs) But I learned a lot on both sets. On “Petits secrets entre amoureux”, I worked with director David Ferrier, who directed several episodes of the highly successful series Kaamelott and Astrid and Raphaëlle. He’s a fascinating and very cheerful director, with whom I had a great time working. He knows how to guide wonderfully, but also leaves room for ideas and acting choices. TF1 is the most-watched French channel, with millions of viewers, so I obviously felt pressure, but I was very proud to be part of this family for two series.
And in 2017, you starred in the hit play “Désigné Coupable.” Did you help direct it?
Yes. There were five of us working on the play… I played the role of a woman older than me. I was 21, and in the story, she was supposed to be in her forties. I was perfectly guided by the director, Yann Chevalier, but I was also free to make my own choices, both in terms of acting and direction. I’m proud to have contributed, and I also learned a lot. It was a real challenge, but extremely educational. And the play was a success in Paris and the provinces, so it was a great joy.
What’s next?
What’s next? Continue on this path, pursue my dreams… Continue doing what I love most in the world, and see where the wind takes me! I also have a lot of projects with the actress I met on the set of Ridley Scott, Fiona Valinski. She recently starred in a film with Jamel Debbouze, a great French actor, and she’s also the lead actress in the latest music video by the famous French singer Matt Pokora! She has a great future ahead of her, and we have lots of ideas to bring to life together. So, see you on the next adventure !
