Vulkan Mag: Joanna, you’ve worked with some of the biggest names and brands in the industry. Tell us how your career began and what led you to this point.
Joanna: My career started in Paris, where I was lucky to immerse myself in a city synonymous with art and fashion. I’ve always loved creating, and makeup became my way of merging artistry with real-life expression. Over time, my passion and persistence opened doors to working with brands like Chanel and, more recently, shooting a commercial for APC in Los Angeles.
Vulkan: Working with brands like Chanel is a dream for many artists. What was that experience like for you?
Joanna: It was incredible—Chanel is iconic, and every detail of their work is so intentional. I worked with their team on a campaign that celebrated timeless elegance, which is what the brand is all about. Being part of a project with such a strong creative vision was inspiring, and it pushed me to elevate my artistry to match their legacy.
Vulkan: And then transitioning to Los Angeles for a commercial with APC. How does that differ from your work in Paris?
Joanna: Los Angeles is vibrant and bold, with a more relaxed yet edgy energy compared to Paris. The APC commercial was a perfect example of that—it was about capturing a cool, effortless vibe that felt authentic. Paris leans more into refinement and tradition, while LA lets you play with trends and personality. I love being able to shift between these worlds.
Vulkan: What do you think sets your work apart as a makeup artist?
Joanna: I think it’s my ability to adapt while maintaining a strong artistic voice. Whether it’s a high-fashion campaign, a commercial, or a celebrity client, I focus on enhancing the story we’re telling. I aim to bring out beauty in a way that feels true to the project and the person.
Vulkan: What’s the most exciting part about working with global brands and high-profile clients?
Joanna: It’s the collaboration. Every project brings together talented teams with unique visions, and being part of that creative process is thrilling. Plus, seeing the final product—whether it’s a campaign, a commercial, or a red-carpet moment—is so rewarding.
Vulkan: You’ve built a career spanning two major cities. How do you manage the demands of such a dynamic lifestyle?
Joanna: It’s definitely a balancing act, but I thrive on the variety. I’ve learned to stay organized and embrace change, whether it’s adjusting to time zones or switching creative gears between Paris and LA. The key is staying present and fully committing to each project.
Vulkan: Are there any moments or projects that stand out as pivotal in your career?
Joanna: Working for brands like Piaget, Dior and Maybeline New York was definitely a milestone—it reaffirmed my love for timeless beauty and precision. The APC commercial was another highlight because it allowed me to explore a modern, minimalist aesthetic that was very different. Each project has its own story, and those experiences shape who I am as an artist.
Vulkan: How do you stay inspired and ahead of trends in such a fast-moving industry?
Joanna: I find inspiration everywhere—from art exhibitions and nature to street style and film. I also keep an eye on global trends but focus on interpreting them in a way that aligns with my clients and projects. Staying curious and constantly learning is what keeps me excited about what I do.
Vulkan: What advice would you give to aspiring makeup artists who dream of working with top brands?
Joanna: Invest in your craft and never stop improving. Build a portfolio that showcases your versatility, and be open to collaboration—it’s not just about your skills but how you work with others. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to take risks. Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs come from the unexpected.
Vulkan: What’s next for you? Are there any upcoming projects you’re particularly excited about?
Joanna: I’m currently in talks for a few editorial projects and another commercial that I’m really excited about. I’m also exploring more creative collaborations that combine my experience in Paris and Los Angeles. The goal is to keep growing while staying true to my vision as an artist.
Vulkan: Lastly, what do you want people to remember about your work?
Joanna: I want people to see the artistry and intention behind every look I create. Whether it’s a high-fashion editorial or a commercial, my goal is to evoke emotion and tell a story through beauty.
