It seems like once a year TikTok finds out that the Indie artist Djo is actually Joe Keery, the actor best known for playing Steve Harrington in Stranger Things. Last year, his song ‘Chateau’ blew up on social media and currently, his song ‘End of Beginning’ off his 2022 album DECIDE is all over TikTok.
The artist’s sound is reminiscent of a random band performing in the backyard of a college house party in the best way possible. It’s synth-y dream pop meets bedroom rock, with production elements similar to Cocteau Twins and vocals similar to Tame Impala and Mac Demarco. The fact that Djo’s music is blowing up because people don’t know he’s Joe Keery is a testament to his talent, and proves he’s not just another actor trying to expand their talents by starting a music career.
Djo has been relatively quiet in the music industry as of late, only releasing two songs in the past year and a half. With the constant increase in popularity, many wonder if he’ll start to prioritize his music career more. I wouldn’t be too worried about it though, he has plenty of old music in his discography that’s worthy of going viral next year when he blows up again.
