Balenciaga makes rain and sunshine…

Last Sunday, the fashion show for Balenciaga’s autumn 2020 collection took place at the Cité du Cinéma studio complex in Paris. Arriving at the show, the audience found themselves entering the periphery of what looked like a sports stadium with banks of flip-up plastic seats around a central oval. To make it even more grandiose and mysterious, the guests were in total blackness…

A show of swirling clouds and a bass-heavy soundtrack was added to the doom-laden, paranoiac atmosphere. The water splashed dangerously close to the shoes and handbags of the audience. Apocalyptic LED screen depicting lightning storms and other frightening weather patterns reminded its participants of climate change.  “The apocalypse? No, it was a celebration of fashion,” said designer Demna Gvasalia.

The Artist Director,Demna Gvasalia, offered 100 looks with all black silhouettes for men and women. Designed to perfectly balance the past and the future, it is a fusion of ecclesiastic influences with neo-gothic vibes.

Despite the biblical apocalyptic scenario, Gvasalia created for fall: “In spite of all that’s going on in fashion and the world, I still love this. I suppose until the day I die, this is what I am passionate about. I love making clothes.” We’ll remember this catwalk!
