Fairmont New Orleans is the brand's centennial opening, set in a Skidmore, Owings & Merrill bank building with Emeril Lagasse in the kitchen and the Mississippi in view.

A hotel brand reaching its 100th address gets to choose where to plant the flag, and Fairmont chose a former bank. Fairmont New Orleans has opened at 1010 Common St., in a tower that once housed the Bank of New Orleans, and it brings the brand back to the city after two decades away.

The building is the first thing worth talking about. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed it in 1970, and the hotel takes 17 of its 31 stories for 250 rooms. It sits in the central business district, a short walk from the French Quarter. Kailas Cos. developed the project, which Fairmont first announced in early 2024 with a summer 2025 opening in mind. The wait, it turns out, ended with a milestone number attached.

A design brief written in oil money

New York’s Rockwell Group handled the interiors, and it took its cue from the building’s own era. The 1970s oil boom is the reference point, with mid-century touches and local craftsmanship worked through the spaces. That’s a smart reading of a bank tower from 1970. It treats the architecture as a character in the story and doesn’t try to hide it.

The lobby is meant to work as the hotel’s social hub, what Fairmont calls a “cultural living room” for guests and locals alike. Upstairs, rooms and suites have floor-to-ceiling windows and sweeping city views. The custom artwork references New Orleans’ history. Bath products are Le Labo Rose 31, there are Nespresso machines, and the minibars are stocked with locally sourced items. It’s a short list of amenities, but each one is a considered choice.

Emeril in the kitchen, Gold in the clouds

New Orleans doesn’t forgive a mediocre meal, so the dining line-up matters. Fairmont developed its restaurants in partnership with chef Emeril Lagasse and The Emeril Group. The CafĂ© by Emeril is one. The other is the New Orleans debut of Delmonico Steakhouse.

December adds more. Fairmont Gold, the brand’s “hotel-within-a-hotel” format, will take the 29th and 30th floors, with a private lounge overlooking the Mississippi River and a concierge service. A rooftop pool, bar and restaurant are due the same month, along with a 10,000-square-foot spa and fitness center.

For events, the hotel has more than 19,000 square feet of meetings and events space across nine primary venues. In a city that treats a Tuesday as a reason to gather, that seems a sensible amount of room.

Why the number matters

Omer Acar, CEO of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, said the property showcases “meticulous design, spirited gastronomy, and exceptional spaces created for connection.” On the 100th-hotel milestone, he was more lyrical. “Celebrating Fairmont’s landmark 100th hotel in New Orleans is a moment of perfect alignment,” Acar said in a statement. “This is a city built on the very poetry of celebration, culture, and hospitality, setting the ultimate stage for such a historic milestone.”

The timing is good for the business, too. Luxury and upper upscale hotel brands outperformed every other segment in the first half of the year. Accor, Fairmont’s parent company, reported strong third-quarter growth on an earnings call last month, driven by its luxury and lifestyle division. At this year’s Lodging Conference in Phoenix, hospitality leaders argued that luxury hotels with thoughtful programming and quality service will stand out. That description fits a hotel with a chef-led restaurant program, a lobby built for locals and a design idea taken from its own walls.

Scale is part of the picture. Accor operates 5,600 hotels across more than 110 countries, including about 380 in the luxury segment and more than 200 lifestyle hotels, according to its website. Fairmont’s 100 sits inside that larger portfolio, and a bank tower in the Crescent City is a fine place to mark it.
