The previously-retired music persona of Donald Glover, Childish Gambino, released a surprise album on Sunday titled 3.15.20. The title is the date the album first dropped and disappeared from a website Glover dedicated to the release. The album was later brought back on streaming sites on March 22nd.
The 12-track album follows Gambino’s signature genre-defying style, mixing masterful rap verses with hypnotic funk, soul, and sometimes pop-inspired beats, which have you bumping your head to tracks about police brutality. The tracks in the new album are mostly titled with time stamps, revealing no pretense and letting the music speak for itself.
Gambino’s last release was a two-song release in 2018 titled “Summer Pack.” Before that came the fiery and thought-provoking “This is America,” a single addressing gun violence, mass shootings, and racism in America accompanied by a manic and genius music video. His last full-length album came in 2016 with the hit “Awaken, My Love!”
Glover is an actor, comedian, writer, director, and producer as well as a musician. He stars in and sometimes directs his hit comedy series Atlanta and most recently voiced Simba in the 2019 remake of the Disney classic Lion King.
3.15.20 is available on all major music platforms.
