In anticipation of the 91st Academy Awards being held on Feb 24th 2019, various studios, producers and screenwriters are holding screenings of the many films being talked about that are up for nominations. And while categories such as Best Feature Film and Best Actress will always be talked about, the Best Foreign Language Feature has always brought out opinions of every critic in town. This week, to a room filled with academy members, actors, reporters, critics and art lovers, Serbia’s OFFENDERS (Izgrednici) was shown. While its world premiere was held in Chicago during its international film festival, this would be the first time it was shown in Los Angeles: the entertainment capital of the world.
Submitted for the Best Foreign Language Film against 86 other films, the thriller is centered on three sociology students, led by their university professor, conducting separate experiments around the city to prove the “Tetris” theory of chaos and how urban decay produces chaos in society. The screening took place at the Landmark Theatre where attendees were welcomed with an open wine bar and red carpet prior to the film’s screening. Celebrities in attendance included Savannah Kennick (HOLIDAYS, “Arrested Development”), Yi Zhou (CRAZY RICH ASIANS), Evan Williams (“Degrassi: The Next Generation”), Cierra Foster (“Ninjak vs. the Valiant Universe”), actor and host Benjamin Schnau, Antonio Lujak (ROBIN HOOD), Milos Nadazdin (International Photographer), Simmona (Recording Artist) and of course the film’s director and producer: Dejan and Nikolina Zecevic respectively among others.
For all fans of international releases and films that make you think, this film is completely unmissable. Coming out of the theatre you are truly made to think and realize how the film is stimulating both mentally and visually. Real life Tetris!
