HBO has made a deal with Bill Simmons and his digital media company, The Ringer, to create a six-part music documentary series focusing on different aspects of the industry.
Set to premiere on the network in 2021 over six weeks, each installment of the doc series will focus on a different artist, trend, era, and other sectors of the eclectic and vast medium. Each episode will also be helmed by a different director.
“It’s been a dream of mine to put this project together,” Simmons said. We see an opportunity to elevate the storytelling form with music docs…We don’t want to make music docs that just cover the beginning, middle and end of someone’s career. We think there’s a different way to do these.”
The as-yet-titled series will be HBO’s musical answer to ESPN’s “30 for 30” series, which produced the critically acclaimed “O.J.: Made in America.” Simmons and The Ringer have produced some excellent media content (their best TV episodes of the 21st century is grade A work), and HBO is…well they’re HBO, of course. 2021 cannot come soon enough.
