You started on Vine and have now dominated Instagram, TikTok, and more—what’s your secret to staying relevant in an attention-deficit world?
Honestly, I just stay true to myself and have fun with it! After being on social media for so long, I’ve learned that authenticity is key—people can tell when you’re being real, and that keeps them coming back!
Your energy is unmatched. What fuels you more: the applause or the drama?
Applause and support have a far greater impact than drama.
You’ve created a brand out of unapologetic confidence. What’s one thing that can still make you insecure?
Honestly, I think even the most confident people have their moments. For me, it’s sometimes dealing with imposter syndrome. You have to remind yourself that everyone has these doubts and to trust the process. I’m still learning and growing every day, but I have definitely come a long way!
Your rants are iconic. If you could rant about one topic in pop culture without holding back, what would it be and why?
Hm, if I could rant about one thing in pop culture… it would have to be how people tend to constantly cancel others over the tiniest mistakes. Like, we have to let people learn and grow! We all mess up.
How do you feel about the current influencer landscape? Is it innovation, oversaturation, or just a mess?
It’s a little bit of all three! There’s for sure some innovation happening—people are getting super creative and trying new things for sure. But at the same time, yeah, there’s a lot of oversaturation. It can feel like a mess sometimes, but honestly, that’s what makes it fun. Everyone’s figuring it out, and we’re all navigating through to the best of our ability.
Who’s the last person you muted or unfollowed on Instagram, and why?
I don’t even remember who it was, but I’ll tell you why: it must have been someone who was just constantly negative. I don’t like the vibe of one who is always complaining or putting others down for no reason. I’m all for being real, but we have to shed positivity.
People love you for your authenticity—how do you keep it real when everyone’s trying to curate their lives?
This might sound boring, but I keep it real by trying my best to not overthink everything. I’ve learned that trying to be perfect or constantly curate everything is exhausting. I like to show my followers when I’m being goofy, when I’m having a bad day, or when I’m just living my best life. That’s what makes it genuinely authentic.
If Vine hadn’t died, what kind of six-second content would Rickey Thompson 2024 be serving?
Probably some high-energy skits!
You’re vocal about not caring what people think. Has there ever been a moment where someone’s opinion got under your skin?
I’ve had moments where people’s opinions did get under my skin. At this point, we all have those times where you see a nasty comment or hear something negative, and it’ll sting for a bit. I mean, I’m human! But then I remind myself that at the end of the day, those opinions don’t define me.
If you could trade places with any celebrity for a day, who would it be and what’s the first thing you’d do?
BEYONCÉ. The first thing I’d do is definitely enjoy those vocals while singing in the bathroom!
Your laugh is practically a brand at this point. When was the last time something made you laugh until you cried?
My laugh is definitely my secret weapon! Honestly, I can’t remember the exact conversation, but I do know I was surrounded by my closest friends on a night out, and we just couldn’t stop laughing.
What’s one thing about the internet fame game that people don’t talk about, but should?
Creating content is such a privilege, but it can also be mentally exhausting. It’s important to pace yourself and prioritize self-care.
You’re always giving the main character energy. When’s the last time you felt someone didn’t deserve a starring role in your life?
I think the last time I felt someone didn’t deserve a starring role in my life was when they were just giving me nothing but negative energy. That’s a big no-no for me.
Rickey Thompson in 2030—are you still spilling tea on the internet, or will we find you front row at the Met Gala with Anna Wintour?
Yessss, catch me at the Met Gala with Miss Anna Wintour, because you know I’ll be serving looks and bringing the energy. Manifest THAT!
